In the first part I have lay down the basics for getting rid of scabies. Let me recapture the main three points:
1. Tell about your scabies infection.
2. Make a plan of how and what you are going to do about it
3. Isolate yourself from any physical contact
This three are the base of your path back to well being, to your health. Perhaps the third point sounds like a bit too much or unnecessary. It’s not.
By avoiding physical contact you are preventing one of the main needs of scabies – to spread to new hosts and thus ensure their existence.
How scabies spread and live
You see, scabies cannot live (too long) without a host. They need you for their food and reproduction. Take away their conditions and they cannot survive.
Let’s look a closer look how scabies spread and reproduce.
Need to spread
Scabies are very sensitive to their environment and cannot live outside of the host (clothes or furniture) for up to 14 days and 2 to 3 days without human skin! That’s why they are so keen to spread on other hosts whenever they get the chance.
To spread, they need skin to skin contact. Some say you cannot get infected by just shaking hands or touching infected clothes. You might even read about it.
Well, It was so in my case. After I have done my scabies treatment I have briefly touched infected sweater and a week later I again started to see small reddish bumps on my hands. Later it was confirmed to be scabies infection once again.
My advice is don’t take scabies lightly. They spread like wildfire and to stop them you have to give them no chance.
Scabies will conquer the places where skin is soft. Most common ones are between fingers, your private area and on the inside of your elbows and knees. Also, scabies are well known to cause serious itching, sometimes so hard you can scratch your skin off and leave bloody trails.
One of the most common and often forgotten places to look for scabies mites is under your fingernails. Whenever you scratch you spread scabies too. This was the mistake I have made and it cost me few months of my life.
Simply trim your nails as close to your skin as possible and try not to scratch. One of the solutions is to wear rubber gloves. More on that later.
How scabies reproduce
Adult scabies mites lay their eggs into the burrows (small tunnels in your skin) and after 8 to 10 days eggs transform into a “nymphal” stage and then mature into adult mites. They can live 3-4 weeks in the host’s skin.
Adult mites are laying eggs every day and moving through your skin causes intense itching.
To get completely rid of scabies you have to destroy adult mites in your skin and in your clothes, towels and sheets as well as all their eggs.
If you have never been infected with scabies before, there can be 2 to 6 week of incubation period prior to any signs of scabies symptoms. This period is much shorter for persons who have been infected with scabies previously and it is 1 to 4 days.
How to diagnose scabies infection
Early scabies infection is very similar to other skin conditions diseases including dermatitis, syphilis and other allergic reactions.
One distinct way to tell if someone has scabies infection is to look for well know “S” shapes in your skin.
With time, itching become practically unbearable, especially at night. It helps if you take hot shower as heat disables scabies for some time.
Scabies infection is shown on the skin as bright red rash, sometimes accompanied with small bumps and itching.
If you suspect you might have scabies, make appointment with your doctor immediately. Scabies are not life threatening disease, but can be very unpleasant – to you and members of your family.
There’s many ways of treating scabies infection, but all have one thing in common. You have to isolate yourself from scabies. While this sounds like common sense, it’s far from what most people are doing when treating their scabies infections.
To really treat your scabies infection, you have to get yourself into “clean” environment.
What does “clean” environment mean?
Tell everyone about your problem.
Hiding that you have been infected with scabies is morally unacceptable! You are not helping anyone by hiding your problem. Quite the contrary, you’re quietly infecting everyone you come in contact with. You think they will be happy when they find out what’s been going on?
My suggestion is to free your mind and conscious. Don’t carry this burden all by yourself. Tell your partner, your family and your friends that you are infected with scabies. There’s absolutely nothing to be ashamed of.
I know this might be hart to do as you probably feel ashamed, maybe even depressed and scared. I know how you feel. But trust me, it’s far better to be honest from the start then it is to hide your scabies infection from your close ones.
Being straight about your scabies infection problem is in my vocabulary the first thing to do to put yourself in the “clean” zone. By telling you will be free of any guilt, shame and possible finger-pointing later. While it seems tough it’s far easier to deal with scabies infection clear minded.
Do yourself and all around you a big favour and just tell them about your scabies infection.
Make a plan
With telling everyone about your issue behind you, the next thing your should start thinking about is your plan how you will cure your scabies infection.
It means nothing to lose your head and start panicking. Calm yourself down and take pragmatic look at how things are standing. Be reasonable and take logical steps. Try to put feelings aside this time.
What I did was I have read all I could find about scabies, how they are spreading, how they are living, what conditions must be met so they can reproduce, … Anything I could find about scabies I would read.
There is a lot of false and bad advice out there. That is why I suggest you ask someone to go to local library and get all books about scabies.
IMPORTANT: Do not go out to a library yourself! This might expose others to your infection! Instead, ask someone you know, preferably over the phone. Try to have as little physical contact as possible!
One thing you could do is to search on-line for additional scabies information. This is what I did. I used internet to get most of information I needed to heal my scabies infection.
Using internet to gather information about scabies is great option, because you will not infect anyone else! And you will get information instantly. I would even go so far and say that you should get all information about scabies and how to get rid of them on-line.
What will probably happen is that you will get too much information and get overloaded with it. This is quite normal to expect. You are in pain and you seek information on how to remedy this pain.
My advice here is to jot down few notes and take them with you on a visit to your doctor – local dermatologist. He will know best how you should go about healing your scabies infection.
Do not make the same mistake I did – do not underestimate scabies! They might seem tiny but they are hard to get rid off. It took me more then one year to find the right way of getting rid of scabies. Then, using this system, I got rid of scabies in less then 10 days – once and for all.
Isolate yourself from physical contacts
I guess you already know, scabies spread by physical contact. Even short handshake with infected person is enough to get infected with scabies.
The greatest favour you can do to yourself (and to everybody else in your proximity) is to get physically isolated. This means:
- no skin-to-skin contact
- don’t let other come in contact with your clothes or sheets
- use separate towels
- separate your clothes from clothes of others (put them in a plastic bag – more on this later)
- don’t use the car!
And so on.
The main point here is to try preventing scabies epidemic in your house (or apartment). Please have in mind that everything you touch (spoons, computer keyboard, desk, door handles, steering wheel, …), everything can get infected with scabies.
While scabies cannot live and reproduce without a host (ie. you), they can live for up to 4-5 days without one. They can stay in your clothes, sheets, towels and even on your furniture.
I urge you to take no chances and start treating scabies infection with proper care and thought. If you take it lightly, you will have a lot of problems later. Better be cautious about it from the very start then to play it cool and infect all your friends and family.
Take my advice and isolate yourself from everybody. If you have told them about your issue (like I advised your before) your friends and family members should have no problem with your actions.
Later on I will write exactly what I did and how I did it to get rid of scabies infection. It might seem I took the paranoid approach, but try stepping in my shoes of being infected with scabies for well over a year.
I practically haven’t got a life. Everything I did was always questioned with “could this potentially…” and so on. Believe me, you don’t want to get in this situation.
Be honest and tell about your scabies infection.
Be honest and do the right thing. Isolate yourself physically. Your friends and family will be grateful.
This does not mean you can’t talk or see your friends. Quite the contrary – I believe you should! You will need all support you can get and they are the ones to ask it from. Just don’t touch them or even sit on a chair only used by you.
Scabies treatments is no game. It’s a hard fight, mostly mental. You will need all the help you can get. Hiding your scabies infection will only make things worse. Be honest, tell your close ones about it, go see a doctor and then make a plan how you will treat your scabies infection.
There’s really nothing embarrassing about being infected with scabies. The only embarrassing thing you can do is not telling about it. It can be hard, but believe me, it’s for your own good.
Scabies are one thing that you do not want. Period.
They are hard to spot the first time you get them and yes, you will have to fight hard to get rid of scabies in your first try. Most people fail at their first scabies treatment.
Scabies are tiny parasites that live in your skin, just under the surface. To survive, they need warmth, food and a host. In other words – you.
Scabies spread by physical contact (ie. scratching, touching, using infected clothes, …) and first symptoms of scabies are noticable only after 3 or 4 weeks after you have been infected. In this time you can easily infect all your clothes, your sheets, your car and all your family members, friends and everyone you come in contact with.
This is why I said most people fail in their first scabies treatment attempt. They live inside higly infected scabies environment and not even knowing it. And this is, in my opinion, the main issue – lack of knowledge about scabies.
On this site I will try to provide every possibe info on scabies – how to avoid them and how to treat them. I’ve been infected with scabies myself, so I know what I’m talking about from my own experience.
You are welcome to join my informational and free newsletter and give any feedback about this site so I can further improve it.
At last, if you have scabies, don’t despair! Scabies treatment is as much psyhological war as it is physical. Knowledge is your best weapon against scabies! Scabies infection CAN be cured and it can be done in under 10 days. I know, I did it – after more than a year of failed attempts and lots of stress.
You will treat your scabies infection! You will be healty again!
